JAWS Reboot in 3D?

The internet was abuzz recently about the news of an upcoming JAWS reboot to be done in 3D. After the massive success of James Cameron’s Avatar, Hollywood is all over 3D, so this really comes as no surprise. The surprise though was that Tracy Morgan, of the NBC sitcom “30 Rock” was rumored to be playing Matt Hooper, which would make the remake a comedy? No!

Over at Cinema Blend, this is what was said:

“A source of ours over at Universal Pictures says the studio is strongly considering a remake of the summer blockbuster in hopes of dazzling younger audiences with new special effects. Their claim is that people now expect more, visually, from their movie going experience. So, Hollywood studios are inclined to take some of their tried and true franchise names like Jaws and bring them into the 3D world. Our insider says Tracy Morgan was at one point being considered for the part of Matt Hooper, previously played by Richard Dreyfuss. While it’s uncertain whether that’s still the plan, it does indicate that they seem to be taking a more comedic direction with the part.”

MTV caught up with Tracy Morgan at the premiere of Cop Out and asked him about the Jaws remake. Morgan: “I would love to do a ‘Jaws’ movie. That was a great, great franchise. I would love to do ‘Jaws.'” But when asked if anyone has ever spoken to him about it, he answered: “Not yet.”

Hollywood loves remakes, so there is no doubt in my mind that a JAWS reboot in 3D will be coming, and as much as I, and other fans are not in favor of it, we will all plunk down our hard earned cash and see it. Universal knows this — there is a lot of money to be made. My hope is that they treat it seriously, and not make it a comedy or a jokey action flick. The original JAWS is a classic, with Oscar-nominated actors providing perfect performances. Please don’t cheapen the legacy of JAWS any more than 1983’s JAWS 3-D and 1987’s JAWS the Revenge already have.

What do you think? Do you think a remake of JAWS could actually work? Who would YOU like to see in the roles of Hooper, Brody and Quint (and Mayor Vaughn, Ellen Brody and Bad Hat Harry)? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.

  1. not awsum,lame

  2. this looks like one giant shit sandwich. i love the franchise ever since i was a kid, but there would be several issues with a remake or a another to add to the series.
#1. the only way to do it justice either way would be to have Speilberg come back to the film that MADE him. but with his current rep, he would turn the sharks into aliens or some stupid shit.
#2. universal would ruin it with all of the stupid ass C.G.I. that garbage ruins films and remakes alike.
#3. i just dont trust anybody to write a script for a new one. im afraid they would try to base it off the video game, which would be a terrible story. they should do something like, bring in a descendant of Quints or something, bring in Michael Brody’s daughter. bring back Richard Dryfus as Hooper. Make it a hit like the first one.
#4. this ridiculous idea of having tracy morgan in the movie is intolerable. the slight thought of putting somebody like him in the film is terrible. for one, hooper was white, two, morgan is a comedian, it just wouldn’t work. it would take some very serious thinking before moving on such a project. i fear for the franchise either way. there are no more good writers or directors.

  3. A “JAWS” remake? That’s one of the worst ideas I’ve ever heard. There aren’t many movies that belong behind bullet-proof-glass, but Jaws is one of them. (Ten Commandments, Godfather, Rocky…you get the idea.) Look at the hot mess that Tim Burton unleashed with his horrid remake of Planet of the Apes…’Nuff said.

  4. I think a new jaws film would please everyone including myself (a shark fiend) as long as you say they don’t make it a comedy and has the right director ie someone not action or comedy but saying that as long as they appreciate the fans and the first film then anyone would do. I feel that this would introduce a real classic to the next younger generation, remakes are very good as long as they are not done to just make money and alot of consideration to the fans go into it. Please please make it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!???????

  5. Please leave orignal and no remake of it,Thiers only 1 hooper, quint, brody.

  6. I feel that a new formula can work.As long as it is done with great care.Would a period piece work better as a remake? Why bring the story into the 21st century. Why not base the movie back in the time it actually happened in the late 70’s? That may work far better than trying to update a work that may well be served staying in it’s intended time.

  7. My cast choices:

Hooper – T.J. Thyne (Dr Jack Hodgins from ‘Bones’ TV Series)
Chief Brody – Andrew Lincoln (Rick Grims from ‘The Walking Dead’ Series)
Quint – ?? The hardest to cast. No idea there, but would need to be perfectly cast to make a remake work.

  8. My cast choices IF they were going to take this masterpiece and revamp it so us loyal Jaws fans may take it seriously.

Quint – Vincent D’Onofrio (Det Gorran Law & Order)

Hooper – David Tenant (Doctor Who Series)

Brody – Big role and I could picture Nicolas Cage doing an outstanding performance.

    Ellen Brody – Charlize Theron

Mayor Vaughn – Tom Arnold, I think he could pull this off easily.

Let hope, that if they do a remake, they dont F* it up
