JAWS Reboot in 3D?

The internet was abuzz recently about the news of an upcoming JAWS reboot to be done in 3D. After the massive success of James Cameron’s Avatar, Hollywood is all over 3D, so this really comes as no surprise. The surprise though was that Tracy Morgan, of the NBC sitcom “30 Rock” was rumored to be playing Matt Hooper, which would make the remake a comedy? No!

Over at Cinema Blend, this is what was said:

“A source of ours over at Universal Pictures says the studio is strongly considering a remake of the summer blockbuster in hopes of dazzling younger audiences with new special effects. Their claim is that people now expect more, visually, from their movie going experience. So, Hollywood studios are inclined to take some of their tried and true franchise names like Jaws and bring them into the 3D world. Our insider says Tracy Morgan was at one point being considered for the part of Matt Hooper, previously played by Richard Dreyfuss. While it’s uncertain whether that’s still the plan, it does indicate that they seem to be taking a more comedic direction with the part.”

MTV caught up with Tracy Morgan at the premiere of Cop Out and asked him about the Jaws remake. Morgan: “I would love to do a ‘Jaws’ movie. That was a great, great franchise. I would love to do ‘Jaws.'” But when asked if anyone has ever spoken to him about it, he answered: “Not yet.”

Video clip via MTV below:

Hollywood loves remakes, so there is no doubt in my mind that a JAWS reboot in 3D will be coming, and as much as I, and other fans are not in favor of it, we will all plunk down our hard earned cash and see it. Universal knows this — there is a lot of money to be made. My hope is that they treat it seriously, and not make it a comedy or a jokey action flick. The original JAWS is a classic, with Oscar-nominated actors providing perfect performances. Please don’t cheapen the legacy of JAWS any more than 1983’s JAWS 3-D and 1987’s JAWS the Revenge already have.

What do you think? Do you think a remake of JAWS could actually work? Who would YOU like to see in the roles of Hooper, Brody and Quint (and Mayor Vaughn, Ellen Brody and Bad Hat Harry)? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Latest Info on ‘JAWS 35: A Tribute’ Event

After reporting last week that the event was on for this fall, it is now delayed until 2011.

The latest:

This past week, JAWS© celebration event promoter Susan Sigel Goldsmith received the official response from Universal Studios to her request for permission to develop and promote ‘Jaws35 : The Tribute’ in fall of 2010. The request was denied for that time period. Universal indicated this denial was due to a new release for JAWS currently being scheduled in 2011. Sigel Goldsmith indicated it seems likely that permission would be granted for celebration timed with the new release in 2011, thereby creating an anticipated delay of roughly 6 months.

“While we are disappointed that we will not be able to deliver an event to the fans in 2010, we are overjoyed at the possibility of having Universal Studios involved in a way similar to JawsFest ‘05”, says Sigel Goldsmith who co-directed the event with the MV Chamber of Commerce in 2005. We will spend the next few days communicating with supporters who have been helping lay the foundation for the event and will be looking at how to use these extra few months to make the celebration a more compelling experience for those who come to Amity in 2011….

From 1/21/10:

The talks with Universal to have this event as an official “GO” should be over in about a week!!! The scheduled dates for the event on Martha’s Vineyard are Sept 30, Oct 1 and Oct 2, 2010!!!

Save the dates, but HOLD off on getting airline tickets until the official announcement is made which (with fingers crossed) should be in about a week. They are also working on complete packages that will include event bracelets, transportation while on Island, and rooms at a variety of price points. These will be the “best-value” deals.

The official site, which will launch upon approval from Universal, is at http://www.jaws35.com and will come live as soon as talks with Universal are final.

Also, as the event is a tribute, they will be launching http://www.JawsTribute.com where you can post 2000 words about what the film has meant to you. They will be collecting these Web submissions over the months preceding the event and plan to compile them into books to give to the families, cast and crew as a memorial. You can work on your submission while they work on getting approval from Universal.

National Lampoon’s JAWS 3, People 0 – Script and Review

One of the best things about Pat Jankiewicz’s new book Just When You Thought it Was Safe: A JAWS Companion is that has a reprint of the proposed movie poster for JAWS 3, People 0, the JAWS comedy/parody sequel that never happened.

In 1979, JAWS Producers David Brown and Richard D. Zanuck partnered with National Lampoon of Animal House fame, commissioned a script and signed on as Executive Producers. Joe Dante (Piranha, Gremlins, Innerspace) was to direct.

Matty Simmons, Producer of Animal House and Vacation came up with a story idea and the screenplay was by John Hughes (Vacation, The Breakfast Club, Home Alone) and Tod Carroll. The script involves a shark causing mayhem while a film company tries to shoot “JAWS 3”, and begins with JAWS writer “Peter Benchley” being devoured by a shark in his swimming pool while he is working on the script for “JAWS 3”. All the villains are film execs and the whole thing is very corny. According to Simmons, Steven Spielberg was not happy about the sequel and JAWS 3-D was made instead. Forces of Geek has uploaded the script for all to read at the link below:

Another blogger did a review of the script, and that is available here:

Pictures from the Roy Scheider Tribute in Beverly Hills

On April 4th, an event honoring the late Roy Scheider was hosted by his wife Brenda Siemer Scheider and Joshua Newton, British writer-director of Iron Cross, Roy’s last film. The event was held at the Beverly Hills Hotel, and was attended by the stars of Iron Cross, as well as Roy’s children and some of his friends, including Richard Dreyfuss.

JAWS Gets Them All

Another funny JAWS short by Gradius Mojo aka Bowlegged Brody:

The “Raiders” Story Conference

In 1978, fresh off the success of JAWS and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Steven Spielberg sat down with George Lucas and Lawrence Kasdan for a four day “story conference” about what Raiders of the Lost Ark was going to be.  It’s a fascinating read, considering the massive success that Raiders was to become.

I found out about this amazing document from this blog:
Mystery Man on Film: Raiders Story Conference. In the blog post, the author summarizes some of the more interesting aspects of the PDF, so check out the blog post first.

The full 127-page(!) PDF of the story conference transcript can be found here:  Raiders Story Conference Transcript – January 1978, so grab it quick before it disappears from the interwebs forever…

If You Watch JAWS Backwards …

“If you watch the movie `Jaws’ backwards, it’s a movie about a shark that keeps throwing up people until they have to open a beach”.
