The JAWS Ride shuts down for good on January 2, 2012.  Here’s a video I made to document the ride before it is gone …

JAWSFest: The Tribute Event Aug 9-12

There is going to be another JAWSFEST!  JAWSFEST: The Tribute will be held August 9-12, 2012 on Martha’s Vineyard, MA, the filming location of the original JAWS. JAWSFEST: The Tribute is being produced by MV Promotions Network, directed by Susan Sigel Goldsmith.  The upcoming event sounds great for JAWS fans:

This three-day fan-centric event will explore the experiences, filming, and memories from the making of JAWS. Our tribute will concentrate on the men and women of JAWS who have passed, with special focus on Peter Benchley, Roy Scheider, and Robert Shaw. We are inviting fans, families, cast, and crew to join us in Amity (Martha’s Vineyard) to share their personal stories, memorabilia, and experiences. This event will explore how the making of JAWS has impacted the lives of those who came to Amity in 1974 and how the blockbuster film they created continues to impact lives today. 9 am to 10 pm various Island locations.

More information about the event can be found here:

AICN Talks to Spielberg, Full Interview, JAWS Blu-Ray

The full interview Quint of AICN did with Steven Spielberg is available on the Ain’t it Cool News Site. The biggest news for JAWS fans was, of course, Spielberg spilling the beans that the JAWS Blu-Ray is in the works. But there was more … Check out the full interview here: Quint Interview with Spielberg.

Here’s an excerpt of how the stage was set:

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Let me set the stage for this. I put out my feelers out a couple months back with some people at Dreamworks (with much help from mega publicist Deb Wuliger) about getting Steven Spielberg on the phone to talk Jaws, the idea being we could time it to its pending anniversary.

That was the pitch, but that was all cover. I really just wanted to talk to the director of my favorite movie of all time ABOUT my favorite movie of all time. I’m sure my ruse was as transparent as clean plate glass window (I don’t hide my geekiness very well), but the kind souls around Spielberg allowed my request to make it to him and I heard back an enthusiastic yes right before Memorial Day weekend.

We were going to schedule a time between then and June 20th, which was the latest the interview could go up as that was the anniversary of the release of Jaws in 1975, but as of Thursday afternoon I hadn’t heard anything back …

JAWS Blu-Ray in the Works, According to Spielberg

Quint of Aint it Cool News had a lengthy phone interview with Steven Spielberg who confirmed that the JAWS Blu-Ray is in the works. An excerpt is posted on the AICN site now, with the full interview to be posted Monday.

Quint: Is there a Jaws Blu-Ray in the works?

Steven Spielberg: Yes, there is. Yes, there is. I’ve already seen some of it. I don’t have a date yet, but there’s a Blu-Ray absolutely in the works.

Quint: I can’t wait, man. I love that the last DVD release actually had the original mono soundtrack on it as well. I wasn’t a fan of the remixed 5.1 sound – the splashing sounded canned.

Steven Spielberg: Oh, I know. I totally understand that. (In the future) there’s going to be no more digital enhancements or digital additions to anything based on any film I direct. I’m not going to do any corrections digitally to even wires that show.

JAWS Super 8mm Version

Eddie McCormack of jawsmoviearchives.com uploaded this to YouTube and says about it:

“Following the release of JAWS in 1975 the world was awash with related tie-in memorabilia, among the endless items was a single Super 8mm cine reel featuring a heavily edited version of the blockbuster long out of print.

One of the most notable features about of the Super 8mm edition of JAWS is the opening attack on swimmer ‘Chrissie Watkins’, it’s common knowledge that the scene was shot ‘day for night’ for the movie, but less known is the fact that an ungraded version of the daytime shot footage that differs from the final movie appears on the Super 8mm edition.

This discovery was one of the main reasons I originally wanted to convert and view this version of the movie. Obviously due the nature and age of the source material used, the section isn’t perfect but I’ve enhanced the scene to try and present it as clean and bright as the original cine without going too over the top with the contrast and colour correction.

I will be revisiting this at a later stage to restore the original audio, but for now I hope JAWS fans out there enjoy this vintage reel.”
