More great stuff from PeterBenchley.com — an April 1974 article in People Magazine on Peter Benchley’s third novel JAWS.
Peter Benchley’s widow Wendy has recently released a lot of great content that JAWS fans will love. Rare interviews and photos can be found on the site.
You can check it out here:
Recently released by Peter Benchley’s widow Wendy on the new PeterBenchley.com website, this RARE video features Peter interviewing JAWS producers David Brown and Richard Zanuck, Steven Spielberg, and Robert Shaw. Shaw is wearing a yellow JAWS t-shirt for his interview, backed by 70s porn music.
One of the best things about Pat Jankiewicz’s new book Just When You Thought it Was Safe: A JAWS Companion is that has a reprint of the proposed movie poster for JAWS 3, People 0, the JAWS comedy/parody sequel that never happened.
In 1979, JAWS Producers David Brown and Richard D. Zanuck partnered with National Lampoon of Animal House fame, commissioned a script and signed on as Executive Producers. Joe Dante (Piranha, Gremlins, Innerspace) was to direct.
Matty Simmons, Producer of Animal House and Vacation came up with a story idea and the screenplay was by John Hughes (Vacation, The Breakfast Club, Home Alone) and Tod Carroll. The script involves a shark causing mayhem while a film company tries to shoot “JAWS 3”, and begins with JAWS writer “Peter Benchley” being devoured by a shark in his swimming pool while he is working on the script for “JAWS 3”. All the villains are film execs and the whole thing is very corny. According to Simmons, Steven Spielberg was not happy about the sequel and JAWS 3-D was made instead. Forces of Geek has uploaded the script for all to read at the link below:

Another blogger did a review of the script, and that is available here:

Long-time Forum regular Dana Goudreault visited the Gottlieb Research Center at Boston University and got to check out the Peter Benchley Collection there. Dana went there with Jim Beller, webmaster of JAWScollector.com. Here’s some pictures of what they saw in the Benchley collection.
Dana said, “Here are a couple pics from the Peter Benchley collection at the Gottlieb Research Center at BU. Jim and I paid a visit yesterday and enjoyed ourselves for nearly four hours, browsing through the history of the making of JAWS in a way that transported you back to the good ol’ days like never before. I encourage anyone and everyone to contact the center and arrange a visit when you’re in the Greater Boston area.”
A special thanks to Dana and Jim for sharing these pictures!
