I am sure that I recall a song being played in the background of the original Jaws and I also think that i was on the beach.  The song is the Charlene ‘Never Been to Me’ but when I have re-watched these scenes I cannot hear it.  Can someone please confirm whether this song is included in the film and if it is, when exactly it is?  I don’t mind if I am wrong, just want to get this query out of my head.

    Thanks in advance

In the 80′s the vhs editions had a line printed on the back of the box that says: “Some music re-scored”. Universal had to delete 2 songs heard playing on a radio in the background. This refered to the beach scene leading up to the Kintner attack where you hear the songs playing on someone’s portable radio in the background such as “Having My Baby” and “I Honestly Love You”. The latter was sung by 70′s pop sensation, Olivia Newton John. Evidently, there probably was a copyright infringement by using those 2 songs even if they were only used for background noise, and Universal most likely paid for their use. I haven’t researched this but that is my guess.

Thanks for the response and I have to be impressed with that knowledge considering you haven’t researched it. I am loathe to admit to my neighbour that I am wrong, especially when I am such a massive fan of Jaws, but it looks like that I am not as good as I thought I was!! I could have sworn that I heard that song in the background though. Much appreciated Jaws Junkie

You’re welcome! I really don’t know that much about music. I always notice everything about Jaws. And when i saw “Some Music Re-scored” on the back of the vhs box at the time (probably mid-80′s) I first thought that they loused up the John Williams score, but noticed it was on the background track during the Kintner beach scene. The music Universal substituted could very well be the song you’re talking about, I don’t know. It was music I had never heard.
I’m the same way as you about these things and it can really bother me if I can’t figure it out.

Thanks again for the update. I now know that my knowledge of the film is meagre in comparison to real Jaws enthusiasts but it is still my favourite film of all time. Each time I watch it I see something new and even when I was watching it listening for the song at the weekend, I noticed a guy digging his pen into the tiger shart that is strung up on the jetty. Seen the film literally a hundred times and not noticed that before.

thanks again for taking the time to respond.
