Hi everybody, I'm Patrick from France.
I was 13 when I saw Jaws on french "cinemas" , exactly, in january 1976.
I find the opening scene absolutely terrifing, but technically it's a "jewel".
All ingredients are there : fear, darkness, death….And that gives a very impressive reaction to the spectator.
She dies in two times.
At first, when she grabs the buoy, we believe that she is saved, but unfortunately, the shark sizes her, and our hope to see her alive again is definitely closed. This death in two times is very difficult to support and that contribues to make this scene one of the most horrifing scenes ever seen in a movie.
This is the only scene which is not in french even on the french version…I suppose, it was very difficult to find a voice who would be able to repalce Susan's voice with the same intensity.
I'm not enough "good" in english ton understand perfectly what she says, but it seams to be a prayer, but I can't understand all.
Tell me : what does she says exactly ?May 12, 2010 at 1:10 pm #6118Chrissie says "Oh God, Oh God" in the film. Spielberg asked her to say the Lords Prayer but nobody on set could remember the words to the prayer so they went with this. Maybe the version in France you are able to her the Lords Prayer in the voice over.
May 17, 2010 at 11:47 am #6119Yeah the script at least on the Cal State cite has this.
Oh! God help me! God! Argh! God help!
Cassidy: I'm coming… I'm coming.
Chrissie: It hurts! It hurts! Oh my god! God help me! God please help!
http://www.its.caltech.edu/~squires/jaws_script.htmlI've heard that Spielberg poured water down Susan's (the actress) throat and recorded her sounds.
May 18, 2010 at 7:38 pm #6120Thanks to everybody for these precisions.
I thought that that was these kind of words.By the way, in may , each monday evening, the French TV gives us JAWS.
Monday 10 th : JAWS
Monday 17 th : JAWS 2
Monday 24 th : JAWS 3
Monday 31 st : JAWS 4May 19, 2010 at 3:40 am #6121Ciao Patrick,
I’m Alessandro, from Florence, in Italy.
I enjoy very much the first movie.
We called it : LO SQUALO in Italian. In Italian version, too, the opening scene with Chrissie is in english.
I know that the actress was injured, during the filming of the scene, probably because of the level of violence which is required. You have right to mention the “death in 2 timesâ€.
For me, Jaws is a movie built like Verdi’s Operas.
All ingredients are here, and the dramaturgy of “Maestro†Spielberg is wonderful. The sound of the buoy, the camera which don’t move any more and the poor Chrissie who comes dying in front of us….
And also, the little boy….horrible, and the scene when his mother meets chief Brody, totally ravaged by the pain….in italian movies, we have often this kind of scene.
And of course, Quint, who wants absolutely killing the shark, who represents the death of so plenty of his friends in 1945….it’s vengeance, like Verdi….
But Quint becomes the hero and must go in front of the shark, who represents his destiny.
For a such man, in a such situation, death is the only issue.May 19, 2010 at 1:12 pm #6122"I've heard that Spielberg poured water down Susan's (the actress) throat and recorded her sounds"
Yes on the full length 'making of', Richard Dreyfuss says how he went to the studio to do some of his lines and this unfortunate girl was sat in a chair with her head back sceaming her lungs out while Spielberg poured water down her mouth.

May 23, 2010 at 9:11 am #6124my aunt watched jaws when it first came out in the cinma and she has always told me she could not watch Chrissie's death out of the hole of the film till this very day
May 26, 2010 at 8:13 am #6125I knew about Susan recording in studios and Spielberg pouring water in her mouth for more realistic situation.
I hope that she get enough money for this scene.Jaws is a movie, yes, but I interoogated myself about real responsabilities of the mayor and Brody.
Ok, for the first victim, we cant do nothing.
But, the little boy, Alex, it's different.
Chief Bordy and the Mayor, and others, know pertectly that a shark is present along the coast and it's dangerous, and in despite of that, the town hall allows that people goes in the water.
I'm sure that in reality, severe pousuits in justice must be required against the mayor and the police…it's a crime.
And think to this poor Lady, (Alex's mom), her life is finished…May 26, 2010 at 11:33 am #6126well .. Mrs. Kitner could have decided to get revenge … she could have been like Pamela Voorhies in the original Friday The 13th … they could make a slasher film on Amity Island and it could turn out that Mrs. Kitner is the killer … at the end, when she is discovered to be the killer she could say "Did you know a little boy was killed by a shark here … They knew there was a shark in the water and they still let people swim .. oh my poor Alex .. i couldn't allow them to re-open this beach .. could I ?"
May 26, 2010 at 12:49 pm #6127Cool film idea Soup (better than another sequal!) – I'd watch it
May 27, 2010 at 11:56 am #6128And the actor's last name who played Alex is….?
May 27, 2010 at 1:19 pm #6129voorhies .. there you go .. someone start writing the script ..
May 27, 2010 at 7:03 pm #6130Yeah, but what do you call the film? Jaws the 13th?
May 27, 2010 at 7:20 pm #6131The Amity Horror
May 28, 2010 at 3:45 am #6132I agree totally with you Patrick.
Such a pain gives the direction of vengeance, it is human.
She directs her vengeance towards the shark, but it's an animal, it's not really guilty, it's a predator in the life, the guilties are the authorities. If the similar thing would happen in Italy, a mom would lose her son in the same conditions, and she would learn that the authorities knew, she would take her rifle and would kill the leader of the Police and the Mayor, and she would be supported by the population.

Well, there goes my trip to Italy…..
