Original Director for JAWS

Before Spielberg came onto the project for the movie there was a director that Brown and Zanuck had. However after he kept referring the shark as the whale he was taken off JAWS. Every documentary on JAWS they don't say the original director's name. Does anyone know the name of the guy?
