UK Release date?

I understand that Jaws was released in the UK in January 1976.
Does anyone know why it was released at this time?
1. It was released in the summer 1975 in USA, and UK usually gets release approx month later – so why didn't this happen?
2. Jaws is a summer film – beach holidays, etc, – so why wait until January when in the UK nobody can go near water anyway because it's freezing!
3. It was still a huge hit, but surely it would have been even more popular with a summer release.

markrgv I am sorry I can't tell you why it was not released until January.However I agree 100% Jaws is a summer movie.Even though you can enjoy it any time of year it should have been released in the summer.

You have to consider this was 35 years ago. They probably could of waited til Summer of 76, but I'm sure Universal didn't want to wait those extra 6 or 9 months for the revenue. Also maybe at that time, they took the prints that were used in the US and gave them to the UK market. This was close to the time that the movie started to leave the theaters. Other nationalities, needed to be dubbed or translated. Again, Jaws changed the way movies were marketed and distributed. I'm not an authority, this is just assumption. Maybe someone in the industry can confirm or deny.

Yes I find it a strange one. I had always assumed that it came out in the summer of 1975 (in UK) – then read somewhere that it came out in Jan 76 (which I thought must be wrong). But having checked on IMDB this is correct.

I don't know, maybe back then films came out 6 months later after their US release – but I wouldn't have thought so…

For a few $ more Italy premiere : 1965
Hong Kong premiere : 1970

…..and people today complain of waiting 3 months lol
