Has anyone else seen the Ultimate Air Jaws programme on Discovery? It shows some amazing footage of Great Whites breaching shot on high speed cameras (1,000 frames per second) with spectacular results. Check your TV guides for a repeat as it's really not to be missed.
September 27, 2010 at 5:58 pm #9006I did see it. If you are interested, Air Jaws 1 and 2 are available on a combo DVD. It was very impressive, to be sure; however, I'm not sure how I feel about watching them do that. It's kind of like finding out that Darth Vader does pirouettes in his private time. 8)

Good comparison there. I've seen the first Air Jaws but not the second, shall have to kep an eye out for it.September 29, 2010 at 8:24 am #9008I own Air Jaws 1 & 2. That was back when Discovery used to air more educational programs about sharks. Now it's all mindless programming about how to survive an attack, etc.
Still haven't seen Ultimate Air Jaws, don't have cable t.v. I'll pick it up if/when they release it on DVD.
If anything, knowing that white sharks have the ability to breach the surface of the water to attack a prey item gives the famous scene at the end a bit more scientific credence. I remember a time when naysayers used to say "But sharks don't jump out of the water!" Now we can call b.s. on that argument.
Makes that whole scene all the more terrifying, IMHO, because now we know that white sharks really CAN jump out of the water!
September 29, 2010 at 10:23 am #9009I agree about the mindless programming with so called documentaries. If they start with suspenseful music or mention that 'surfing humans look like seals' then I tend to turn off.
October 2, 2010 at 2:53 pm #9010Too true. There's nothing new. I realise that I, we, are not the norm and probably know more about sharks than the average bear; however, when they are showing scientists in the field experimenting to prove something that I learned about either in a book or a documentary ten years ago then I question the level of intelligence involved.
October 4, 2010 at 1:11 pm #9011I have got them on DVD. Not a collector of nature docs but i never get bored of watching them attack those seal shaped surf boards with the cameras in them. Spectacular
October 5, 2010 at 1:56 am #9012Yeah I also them through DVD. Seriously specking, I really enjoyed it. It was Spectacular.
