JAWS 2 was the 5th highest grossing film of 1978, and the highest grossing sequel ever until The Empire Strikes Back came out in 1980.

Virtually a remake of JAWS although without key players Spielberg, Shaw, and Dreyfuss, who are sorely missed.

Once again the town of Amity is terrorized by a giant shark, and once again Chief Brody wants to shut down the beaches. Mayor Vaughn, refuses to allow the beaches to be closed because of a pending property development deal.

The Chief’s son Micheal is now a rebellious teenager with a love for sailing. Michael and his friends find themselves in danger when the shark attacks them while they’re out on the high seas. It’s Dad to the rescue as he tricks the shark into biting down on a high voltage cable.

Worst ripoff scene(s):

Shameless duplication of scenes present in JAWS, with minor changes. For example:

In JAWS, the shark pulled the Orca backward through the water; in JAWS 2, the boat Deputy Hendricks is using is pulled backwards through the water. You’re supposed to think it’s the shark, but it turns out that the boat’s winch has snagged an underwater high voltage cable.

In JAWS, Hooper, while diving, is startled by Ben Gardner’s head when he looks into a hole in Gardner’s boat; in JAWS 2, Brody, while wading, is startled by the head of a woman when he turns over a piece of her boat wreckage.

In JAWS, Spielberg uses a beach montage to show the variety of people and activity on Amity’s beach; in JAWS 2, there is an almost identical beach montage.

In JAWS, for the final confrontation between Brody and the shark, Brody waits while the shark rushes toward him, and says, “smile, you son of a bitch!”; in JAWS 2, Brody waits while the shark rushes toward him, and says “open wide!” or something to that effect.
